For many years now, state and federal governments have been incentivizing homeowners to go solar by providing rebates and tax breaks for solar panel installations, like the federal tax credit. And while these incentives have helped the solar industry grow substantially, little has been done to promote the installation of solar batteries—until now!

The Arizona Corporation Commission recently approved the APS Residential Battery Pilot. Through the program, APS hopes to learn more about solar battery performance, the value battery storage provides for homeowners, and how solar batteries can reduce stress on the electric grid.

The APS battery incentive is great news for homeowners who are thinking about going solar and for those who are already using solar panels but have yet to install battery storage.

What Is the APS Solar Battery Pilot Program?

The solar battery pilot program was approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission for Arizona Public Services (APS) to help homeowners with the cost of installing a solar system battery backup. Battery storage is crucial as we move toward a fully renewable future, and making solar batteries more accessible will help Arizona achieve its clean energy goals. The program will also allow utility companies to collect data about solar battery storage and how it affects the grid.

Eligible homeowners have two options for participating in the Pilot:

Option One: Data Only

Data-only participants opt to share their battery backup system’s performance data with APS. If you choose this option, you’ll be eligible to receive $500 per kW of battery capacity. There is a maximum incentive of $2,500 per home for data-only participants.

Option Two: Data Plus Battery Management

Data plus battery management participants agree to share their battery’s data and to allow APS to utilize up to 80% of their battery’s capacity for a maximum of 100 events per year. If you choose this option, you’ll be eligible to receive $500 per kW of battery capacity with a maximum of $2,500 per home plus an additional $1,250 incentive. The total maximum capacity per home is $3,750.

Who’s Eligible for the APS Residential Battery Pilot?

To qualify for the incentive program, homeowners must:

  • Install an eligible home solar battery

  • Connect their battery to the APS grid and Resource Operating Platform for the first time

  • Be a customer in APS territory

  • Be on a time-of-use service plan or be grandfathered into a service plan with a solar rate rider

If you meet the above criteria, you can apply for the pilot. To do so, you’ll need to submit a pilot enrollment and an Interconnection Application. Your Interconnection Application must be submitted by a licensed solar installer, like Energy Solution Providers.

Battery Storage Helps Stabilize the Grid & Saves You Money

Here in Arizona, solar panels have been installed on over 170,000 houses, making our state the 5th in the nation for solar energy, but many have yet to install solar plus battery storage.

Without a solar battery, residential solar panels can only function when sunlight is available, rendering them useless in the evenings, which is when the demand for electricity is at its highest—particularly during peak demand periods. Most households end up relying on their utility for electricity when their solar panels are not producing energy, which can increase the strain on the grid.

With a backup battery in place, your system will be able to store the excess energy it generates during the day. Then, when the sun goes down or during peak demand periods, you can use that energy to power your home and avoid triggering more expensive electricity rates from the utility company. Your storage system will also help protect you against power outages and decrease the amount of energy you need to pull from the grid, further reducing your reliance on fossil fuels.
