Battery storage is an optional addition to your residential or commercial solar panels that can provide you access to electricity when your system isn’t producing—but it can also be expensive. Luckily, the federal solar tax credit makes solar panel and battery storage more affordable.
With over 1,400 solar installations throughout Arizona, Energy Solution Providers has become a trusted local name in solar energy and we are committed to helping our community maximize their savings with solar energy. That’s why we stay up-to-date on all of the solar incentives available to home and business owners around the state, including Pinal, Pima, and Maricopa counties.
Solar Batteries Are Eligible For Tax Credits
As part of the monumental Inflation Reduction Act that was passed in 2022, a previous solar tax credit was expanded to cover both residential solar panel installation and battery storage. Sometimes referred to as the Investment Tax Credit (ITC), this incentive reduces your federal tax liability by 30% of your total cost for solar panel or battery installation. Battery storage even qualifies for the tax credit with or without solar panel installation.
There is no maximum limit to the solar battery tax credit and in order to qualify, you must own your property and solar system, along with having a taxable income. If the tax credit exceeds the amount of taxes you owe, the remaining balance will roll over to the following year.
Commercial Battery Storage Incentives
The ITC is also available for commercial solar systems and battery storage, offering the same 30% reduction in tax liability. However, business owners also have the option to take advantage of a different tax credit, known as the Production Tax Credit. This incentive is based on the amount of electricity generated by your solar system for its first 10 years in operation.
In most cases, businesses are unable to utilize both tax credits on the same property—however, they can be stacked for different, co-existing solar products. For example, you can claim your commercial solar system for the Production Tax Credit while your battery storage system is under the Investment Tax Credit. At Energy Solution Providers, we recommend speaking with your tax professional to determine what tax credit option is best for your business.
Why Get Battery Backup?
The cost of adding battery storage to your solar installation is worth it for the many benefits it can provide, such as:
Backup power during an outage
Access to renewable energy 24/7
Use more of the electricity your panels produce
Gain energy independence from the grid
Reduce your reliance on fossil fuels
